Home And Design
Every autumn the paint companies name next year’s colour, and the same question follows: should you? The honest answer depends on how long you plan to stay, and on what it would cost to undo.
The short answer. Heading into 2027, the major paint brands have mostly picked greens and earthy browns, after a 2026 of warm neutrals. Try a trend where it is cheap to change: paint, textiles, lighting and hardware. Be more careful where it is expensive to undo, like tile, cabinetry and flooring, especially if you might sell within a few years.
01. What The 2027 Colour Picks Say.
Each brand names its own colour of the year, and by mid October 2026 most of them had announced. Read together, the message is clear: soft greens, grounded browns and a few muted blues.
| Brand | 2027 pick | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Benjamin Moore | Webster Green HC‑130 | A mid tone green, calm and slightly blue leaning |
| Sherwin-Williams | Celery SW 6421 | A soft, pale yellow green |
| Behr | Grounded | A mossy olive with earthy brown undertones |
| Dulux | Soulful Sage | A soft, grey leaning green |
| Valspar | Cottage Door | A muted mid tone blue |
| Dutch Boy | Deep Rooted | An earthy, terracotta leaning orange |
| Minwax | Pickled Oak | A light, warm wood stain, not a wall colour |
As announced by each brand between August and October 2026. Pantone had not named a 2027 colour at the time of writing.
For comparison, the 2026 picks leaned on warm neutrals: Benjamin Moore chose Silhouette, a charcoal with brown undertones, and Sherwin-Williams chose Universal Khaki, a sandy neutral. If you painted with either, you are not out of date. You are a year ahead of the browns coming back.
02. The Bigger Trends Behind The Colours.
Nature and calm. Greens dominate, and Sherwin-Williams tied its pick to the growing interest in rooms built for rest and wellness.
Warm wood, lighter. A pale oak stain was named a colour of the year, which says a lot about where cabinetry and floors are heading after years of grey.
Old made new. Pinterest’s trend forecast for 2026 pointed to reclaimed and vintage pieces reworked for modern rooms, and to a streamlined Art Deco revival with chrome accents and geometric shapes.
Pattern and play. The same forecast picked out bold stripes and sculptural furniture. These are the trends to enjoy in things that move with you.

03. The Resale Lens: What Does It Cost To Undo?
A bold choice is not a problem in itself. The risk is a buyer standing in the room working out what it would cost to change it, and taking that off their offer in their head.
Easy and cheap to undo
- Paint, including a bold powder room or front door
- Cushions, throws, rugs and art
- Light fixtures
- Cabinet hardware
- Removable wallpaper
Expensive to undo
- Tile, especially on floors and full walls
- Countertops
- Cabinetry
- Flooring
- Built ins and unusual plumbing fixtures
If you plan to stay for years, choose what you love. If you might sell in the next two or three, keep the fixed finishes in a warm neutral and let the trend live in the left hand column. Our paint colours that sell homes post goes deeper on walls.

Common Questions.
What is the 2027 colour of the year?
There is no single one; each paint brand names its own. For 2027, Benjamin Moore chose Webster Green, Sherwin-Williams chose Celery, Behr chose Grounded, a mossy olive, and Valspar chose Cottage Door, a muted blue. Most of the picks are greens and earthy browns.
Should I paint in a trend colour before selling?
Usually not on the main walls. A trend colour can look dated quickly, and it is one more thing a buyer pictures changing. Save it for a powder room, a front door or the things you take with you, and keep the larger rooms in a warm neutral.
Which design trends are easiest to undo?
Paint, cushions, rugs, art, light fixtures and cabinet hardware. All of them can be changed in a weekend for a modest cost.
Which updates are hardest to reverse?
Tile, countertops, cabinetry, flooring and built ins. If you might sell in the next few years, keep those finishes neutral and let the trend live in things you can change.
