Homeowner Tips
There is a short stretch every autumn when the leaves are finally down and the ground has not frozen yet. That is the window. It closes on 31 October, and the City of Calgary has put a date on it.
The short answer. The City of Calgary takes extra yard waste at its Eco Centres free of charge until 31 October 2026, and the green cart drops from weekly to every other week collection in November. Clear the eavestroughs before then, because once the water in them freezes the job is gone until spring.
Most fall maintenance lists are written in the order the jobs occur to the person writing them. This one is written in the order of what it costs you to skip them, which is a different order entirely.
Everything dated here was checked against the City of Calgary on 2 October 2026.
01. The Eavestroughs, And Why They Could Not Have Been Done In September.
This is first because it is the only job on the list with a hard physical deadline that is not a date on a calendar. You cannot clear an eavestrough properly until the leaves are actually down, and you cannot clear it at all once the water inside it has turned to ice.
A blocked eavestrough does not simply overflow. It holds standing water through a freeze, the ice backs up under the lower courses of shingle, and the melt finds its way into the sheathing. In a Calgary or Airdrie winter, where a deep cold snap followed by a warm up is normal rather than unusual, that cycle repeats several times between November and March.
Clear the troughs, then run water through them and watch where it actually goes. The second half of that sentence is the part people skip, and it is the part that finds the problem.
02. Where The Downspout Puts The Water.
A clean eavestrough that discharges against the foundation has simply moved the problem down the wall. Extensions should carry water well clear of the house and onto ground that falls away from it, not into a window well, not onto a walk that will ice over, and not into the neighbour’s yard.
Check the grade at the same time. Soil settles against a foundation over the years, and a negative slope that is invisible in July is obvious the first time you watch a hose run against the wall. October is the last comfortable month to add soil and correct the slope before the ground hardens.
03. The Free Destination For All Those Leaves Closes 31 October.
This is the dated one, and it is genuinely free, which is why it is worth knowing before it lapses.
The City of Calgary states it plainly: residents can bring extra yard waste to a City Eco Centre at no charge from 18 September to 31 October 2026. The Eco Centres will take leaves, branches, plants with the soil removed, and grass clippings. Sod and food scraps are not included in the free window and should go in the green cart instead.
This exists for the overflow, the part that will not fit in the cart. If the eavestrough job, the flower beds and the lawn together produce more than one green cart will hold, and in most yards they do, the difference between doing this before and after 31 October is a disposal charge.

04. The Green Cart Halves Its Frequency In November.
The City’s green cart page states the pattern: weekly pickup from April to October, every other week from November to March.
So the capacity you have been working with all autumn is about to be cut in half, and it happens in the same few weeks that the heaviest yard material of the year comes off the lawn. The City page gives the months rather than a specific changeover date, so check your own collection calendar rather than assuming a particular week.
The practical reading: the last few weekly collections of the year and the free Eco Centre window close at roughly the same time. Use both.
05. In Airdrie, The Leaves Go To The Transfer Site.
Airdrie handles it differently. The City of Airdrie’s Transfer Site takes branches, grass and leaves at $3 per bag or bundle, to a maximum load charge of $15.
The site is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday to Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday, and is closed on Sunday. Airdrie publishes its cart collection schedule by community, so look up your own at airdrie.ca/collectionschedule for your organics cart days.

06. If The Outdoor Water Is Still On, That Is Now Urgent.
This one belongs to September and we wrote it up then, but it is worth a line here because a missed hose bib is the single most expensive item on any fall list.
The City’s own seasonal checklist is direct about it: turn off the outdoor water supply to avoid winter leaks, disconnect and drain hoses and store them indoors, winterize and shut down the irrigation system, and insulate exterior hose bibs and exposed pipes. If none of that has happened yet, do it before you do anything else on this page.
The October List, In Order Of Consequence
Not the order they occur to you. The order of what it costs to skip them.
| Job | Why It Is Here |
|---|---|
| Outdoor water off, hoses drained | Most expensive single failure |
| Eavestroughs cleared and flushed | Only possible in this window |
| Downspouts extended, grade checked | Water goes somewhere either way |
| Yard waste to an Eco Centre | Free until 31 October |
| Furnace filter, smoke and CO alarms | The furnace now runs daily |

If you want the part of this that happens above the ceiling rather than at the eaves, we wrote it up separately in Attic Rain In Calgary, which covers what causes it, why newer homes are more exposed, and what insurance and the new home warranty tend to say about it.
And if the reason this list matters to you is that there is a tax bill still sitting unpaid, we compared what every Calgary area municipality charges you for paying property tax late. The spread runs from 4 per cent to 14 per cent depending on which side of a municipal line you live on.
Common Questions.
When does free yard waste drop off end in Calgary in 2026?
31 October 2026. The City accepts extra yard waste at its Eco Centres at no charge from 18 September to 31 October 2026. Leaves, branches, plants with the soil removed and grass clippings are accepted. Sod and food scraps are not included in the free window and belong in the green cart.
When does the Calgary green cart switch to every other week?
November. Collection runs weekly from April to October and every other week from November to March. The City publishes the months rather than a specific changeover date, so check your own collection calendar.
Why clear eavestroughs in October rather than September?
Because you cannot clear an eavestrough properly until the leaves are actually down, and you cannot clear it at all once the water inside it has frozen. That is a narrow window, and in Calgary and Airdrie it is measured in weeks.
What is the most expensive fall job to skip?
Leaving the outdoor water supply on. A hose bib that freezes and splits is the costliest single failure on any fall list, which is why it sits above everything else here even though it belongs to September.
How far from the house should a downspout discharge?
Well clear of the foundation and onto ground that falls away from the house, never into a window well, onto a walk that will ice over, or into a neighbour’s yard. Check the grade at the same time, because soil settles against a foundation over the years.
Where can Airdrie residents take leaves and yard waste?
The City of Airdrie Transfer Site accepts branches, grass and leaves at $3 per bag or bundle, to a maximum load charge of $15. It is open Monday to Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Thursday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., and is closed on Sunday.

Thinking About Listing In The Spring?
Then this list is not maintenance, it is preparation. Water staining at the eaves and a wet basement corner are two of the things a spring buyer’s inspector will find, and they are both cheaper to prevent in October than to explain in April. Call or text 403.809.4639 and we will tell you which jobs are worth doing before a listing and which ones are not.
