Relocation
I grew up in Charleswood. I came to Calgary in 2003 for the summer and never went home. Here is what I tell every Winnipegger who calls.
The short answer. Homes cost more in Calgary than in Winnipeg, often a lot more. What you save is Manitoba’s land transfer tax, $7,650 on a $500,000 home against about $1,000 in Alberta land titles fees, plus 7% retail sales tax and lower provincial income tax rates. Winters are usually milder here, thanks to chinooks.
Hello, Gorgeous! Winnipeg is home for me. I grew up in Charleswood, my family is in St. James, I cheered for the Blue Bombers, and some of you will remember Tara Lynn hosting the Sunday Night Cruise on Power 97.
Then New York City, then Winnipeg again, and in 2003 Calgary, for the summer, supposedly. What kept me here was the room to build. I have been an entrepreneur since I arrived, and so has my husband Trevor, who grew up in Yorkton. That is the honest pitch for Alberta: not cheaper houses, but room to grow.
Yes, The House Costs More.
Let’s get this out of the way. In September 2026 the CREB benchmark for a detached home in Calgary was $739,400. The average detached sale in Winnipeg in August 2026 was $439,216. Those are different measures, but the gap is real, and anyone who tells you otherwise has not looked.
Airdrie, about half an hour north of Calgary, closes part of that gap with newer homes at lower prices, and it is where I have lived since 2005. Before you start shopping from Winnipeg, get pre approved first so you know what your budget buys here.

No provincial sales tax. Manitoba adds 7% retail sales tax on top of GST. Alberta charges 5% GST only.
Lower provincial income tax rates. For 2026 Alberta’s provincial rates run from 8% to 15%. Manitoba’s run from 10.8% to 17.4%. Whichever province you live in on 31 December sets your provincial tax for the whole year, so time the move with that in mind.
“Tara handled all of these issues without missing a beat, she didn’t get phased or upset, she was extremely professional and ensured we were not taken advantage of.”

Winter, Honestly.
It still gets cold here, and it can snow in May. But Calgary gets chinooks, warm westerly winds that can lift the temperature dramatically in a few hours and melt the snow off the driveway. Winnipeg winters do not let up like that.
The Paperwork When You Arrive.
Health care. Manitoba covers you for the month you move and the two months after. Alberta coverage starts on the first day of the third month after you arrive. Register with Alberta Health Care within three months and there is no gap.
Driver’s licence and vehicle. Exchange your licence and register your vehicle within 90 days, after an out of province inspection.
Distance. About 1,320 km by road, a long day or two on the Trans Canada, or under two hours in the air.
